Service Overview

High cholesterol, also known as hyperlipidemia, is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

Hyperlipidemia is often a life-long condition but very treatable. Patients need to watch what they eat and exercise regularly. In some cases prescription medication is also necessary to regulate abnormal levels of LDL cholesterol or HDL cholesterol.

Examples of recommended lifestyle changes include:

  • Foods low in trans fats and saturated fats
  • Eat more fiber-rich foods, such as oatmeal, apples, bananas, pears, prunes, kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils, and lima beans
  • Eat fish twice a week
  • Avoid sugary drinks and added sugars
  • Avoid fried and processed meats
